The windpipe was part of the anatomy that was essential for Humans to breathe.
The narrator once described the Shark Monster's windpipe as "cavernous."[2]
History
Earth 1956
When Aquaman was transformed into a prehistoric fish due to a mutation caused by exposure to radiation from an isotope, the Super Friends got the aid of the Government of Japan to help transform him back into his normal form.
This called for the use of their shrink gun, which was capable of shooting a Sub-Atomic Shrink Ray; a type of shrink ray that was deemed safe for using on living subjects. This allowed Superman and Wonder Woman to shrink themselves and the Supermobile down to microscopic size, so that they could travel through Aquaman's body and administer the cure for his condition into his brain.
At one point, they were inside of the windpipe, but the wind was so powerful, that Superman couldn't control the Supermobile, and because of this, they were sucked down into the esophagus.[3]
