Silver referred to a chemical element as well as the color of that element. It was quite valuable, and the highest electrical conductor, and the shiniest metal on Earth.
Silver iodide contained silver in it, which was used to "seed" clouds with rain.[2] A spectroscope was a device capable of detecting silver in ore, providing it is present.[3]
