A pilot was someone who could operate an aircraft, watercraft or spacecraft.
The term referred to anyone who operated a flying vehicle, whether it was an air flight or space flight.

Earth 1956
The pilot of the Jet Cargo 847 was shrunk by Doctor Hiram Gulliver's Sonic Microwave Reducer, which caused the pilot to be too small to pilot the vehicle, and the airplane nearly crashes to Earth, but it is saved by Superman.[2]
