Gingerbread was a type of bread made with ginger.
It was often used for making gingerbread houses and other foods.

In 1979, when Superman, Aquaman and Wonder Woman were on Oz following the yellow brick road so as to locate the Wizard of Oz, they briefly went off-road and located a gingerbread house that was inhabited by the "Wicked Witch of the Worst Kind," who turned out to actually be Mr. Mxyzptlk.[2]
